This dive site, Christmas Point, is situated on the western corner of Island 9 in the Similan Islands. It earns its name from the abundant Christmas tree worms that cluster here. The site is characterized by intricate rock formations, shaped by tidal currents, which have created exciting channels and swim-throughs for divers to explore. Navigation involves moving through these dynamic structures, with awareness of potential fast tides, especially in deeper sections.
Christmas Point is teeming with diverse marine life. In the deeper waters where currents are strong, divers frequently encounter whitetip and blacktip sharks. During periods of lower water temperature, the site offers the rare chance to spot large guitarfish, exceeding 3 meters in length, and manta rays may also make an appearance. Closer to the reef and its 'roots,' a variety of butterflyfish, angelfish, and hawksbill turtles can be observed. The shallow areas are vibrant with schools of fusiliers, which in turn attract pelagic predators like bluefin trevally.
This dive site is best visited during the main Similan season, typically from November to May, to maximize chances of encountering its impressive marine life. Divers should be prepared for varying current conditions, particularly in the deeper areas, to safely enjoy the dramatic topography and pelagic encounters. Its diverse features make it appealing for both wide-angle and macro photography, and while it offers excellent opportunities for scuba diving, experienced freedivers might also find the dynamic terrain and shallow areas suitable.
