This dive site, known as Karon cubes, is an artificial reef located off Karon Beach in Phuket, Thailand. It consists of two main stacks of concrete cubes, each with 3-4 layers, separated by approximately 5 meters. While the tops of the structures are found around 16-18 meters and the sandy bottom extends to 21-23 meters, the maximum recommended depth for this site is 16 meters, with an average depth of around 8 meters. The cubes were intentionally deployed to create a vibrant marine habitat, further enhanced by large fishing traps that have become part of the structure.
Karon cubes offers a rich display of marine life, appealing to both macro enthusiasts and those seeking larger encounters. Divers frequently spot impressive big Marble rays gliding past and encounter large schools of snappers that inhabit the area. The site is particularly famous for its excellent macro opportunities, with sightings of well-camouflaged Frog fish, numerous lionfish, and a colorful array of nudibranchs and fabellinas making it a photographer's delight.
The ideal time to explore Karon cubes aligns with Phuket's dry season, typically from November to April, offering the best visibility and calmest conditions. This site is particularly well-suited for beginner and intermediate divers due to its manageable depths and generally mild currents. While the main structures are deeper, its average depth of 8 meters makes it also appealing for freedivers looking to explore the surrounding areas and the upper sections of the artificial reef.
