About this dive site

This dive site, Bajo Amarillo, is an impressive coral formation located on Culebra’s Atlantic side. It presents as an underwater 'bump' with its shallowest point, the top, being less than 20 feet (approximately 6 meters) deep. The formation slopes downwards to depths of around 80 feet (approximately 24 meters) where the vibrant coral reef transitions into sand. This varied topography and depth profile make it suitable for divers of all experience levels, from beginners exploring the shallow top to advanced divers venturing to the deeper sections. Navigation typically involves circling the main formation, allowing divers to explore different depth contours.

The marine life at Bajo Amarillo is rich and diverse, characteristic of the Caribbean. Divers and snorkelers can frequently encounter large schools of Creole Wrasse, Bermuda Chub, and Atlantic Spadefish, which are a highlight of the site. In addition to these schooling fish, the reef teems with the usual array of Caribbean reef species, including various types of hard and soft corals, sponges, colorful reef fish like parrotfish, angelfish, and damselfish, as well as smaller invertebrates such as crabs and shrimps, contributing to a vibrant ecosystem.

The best time to visit Bajo Amarillo is typically during the drier seasons in the Caribbean, generally from November to May, when sea conditions are often calmer and visibility is at its best. Divers should be prepared for potentially variable currents, given its location on the Atlantic side of the island. For freedivers and snorkelers, the shallow pinnacle of the formation offers an exceptional opportunity to experience the abundant marine life and healthy coral in excellent light and relatively calm waters, making it a versatile and rewarding dive and snorkel site for all water enthusiasts.
