This dive site is located within Bottomless Lakes State Park, the first state park established in New Mexico, USA, near the Pecos River southeast of Roswell. Known for its unique series of nine small, deep lakes (actually cenotes or sinkholes), the park offers a distinctive freshwater diving experience. Despite the name 'Bottomless', the maximum diveable depth is 11 meters. Underwater navigation is generally straightforward due to the shallow depths and relatively confined nature of the individual lakes.
Divers can expect to encounter various freshwater aquatic life. Common sightings include several species of freshwater fish like sunfish, bass, and catfish, as well as turtles and aquatic insects. The lakes are also home to diverse aquatic vegetation, creating interesting habitats for smaller creatures.
The best time to visit Bottomless Lakes Park for diving is typically during the spring or fall months, when surface temperatures are milder, and crowds are generally smaller. Summers can be very hot, and winters can bring cold temperatures affecting water conditions. This site is excellent for beginners to practice skills, and its unique geological formations offer an interesting, albeit different, experience compared to ocean diving. Freedivers will also find the shallow depths and calm conditions suitable for practice.
