This dive site, Datura, is a popular shore entry location situated at El Prado Park in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida. It's easily accessible from the beach, beginning at a swim buoy and extending approximately 100 yards east. The site features a natural honeycomb reef structure interspersed with various coral heads, alongside remnants of a bio rock project and an engaging snorkel trail that includes historical cannons, a rock structure, and an anchor. Its history is tied to local conservation efforts and the establishment of an accessible underwater trail for both divers and snorkelers.
The reef structure provides a habitat for a variety of tropical reef fish, including parrotfish, angelfish, damselfish, and wrasses, seeking shelter among the corals and rocks. Small crustaceans and invertebrates can be found within the honeycomb formations. Hard and soft corals are present, contributing to the site's vibrant underwater ecosystem, along with typical Caribbean reef species.
The best time to visit Datura is during calm weather days when visibility is optimal, typically during spring, summer, and early fall. This site is particularly excellent for beginner divers, snorkelers, and freedivers due to its shallow depths and easy shore access. Divers should bring a dive flag due to potential boat traffic further out, and utilize the convenient beach facilities including fresh water showers, a garden hose, and tank benches for a comfortable experience.
