About this dive site

This dive site, Mac’s Reef, is an active oil riggers platform offering a unique and complex diving environment. Featuring three stories of structure, depths range from approximately 21 to 30 meters (70 to 100 feet), providing ample vertical exploration. Divers navigate through the platform's support beams and various levels, which have become heavily encrusted with marine growth, transforming it into a vibrant artificial reef.

The platform acts as a significant fish aggregating device, attracting a diverse array of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter schooling pelagic fish such as jacks, various species of snapper and grouper, and barracuda. The intricate structure also hosts a rich community of invertebrates, including anemones, sponges, and soft corals that have colonized the metal framework.

Mac's Reef is best visited during the warmer months, typically from late spring through early fall, when water temperatures are more comfortable and visibility in the Gulf of Mexico tends to be better. Its depths and mild currents make it an advanced dive suitable for experienced scuba divers, while its compelling structure also presents an exciting challenge for skilled freedivers looking to explore its various levels.
