This dive site, North Star, located west of Cane Bay in St. Croix, offers a diverse underwater experience with two distinct profiles. To the east, divers will encounter dramatic, nearly vertical walls, providing thrilling drop-offs. The western section features classic spur and groove coral formations, creating intricate swim-throughs and interesting topography for navigation. It is accessible directly from shore via a narrow path or by boat, making it convenient for various dive operations.
The North Star dive site is teeming with marine life. The shallower areas are excellent for spotting juveniles thriving among the corals. As divers venture deeper, they should keep a keen eye out for larger pelagic species including majestic turtles, various shark species, and graceful rays. Abundant fish life fills the reef, showcasing a vibrant ecosystem alongside the diverse coral formations.
North Star is suitable for diving year-round, offering consistent conditions for exploration. Divers are advised to explore both the eastern wall and the western spur and groove sections to fully appreciate the site's variety. For snorkelers and freedivers, the shallow areas provide excellent opportunities to observe juvenile marine life close to shore. Keep an eye on currents, which can vary, especially near deeper sections, but generally remain manageable for experienced divers.
