This dive site, known as the Whiskey Wreck, is a historical 200-foot (60m) rum runner vessel resting in shallow waters, ranging from 4.5 to 7.5 meters (15 to 25 feet) with a maximum depth of 9 meters. It covers approximately 300 square yards and is easily accessible, located just 150 yards from the beach. Divers can navigate by heading due south from the east end of a small beach house, west of the public parking area, to find this fascinating structure.
The Whiskey Wreck has become an artificial reef, teeming with life. Divers can expect to encounter various reef fish, including snapper, grouper, and schools of baitfish. Look closely for crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp hiding within the wreck's crevices, as well as moray eels. The wreck structure itself is adorned with vibrant sponges, soft corals, and anemones, providing excellent opportunities for macro photography.
Night diving on the Whiskey Wreck is a particularly rewarding experience, revealing nocturnal marine life often unnoticed during daylight hours. Its very shallow depth makes it an excellent choice for beginner divers, freedivers, and even snorkelers, who can easily observe parts of the wreck from the surface. For optimal visibility and comfort, it's best to plan your visit during calm weather periods, avoiding strong winds or heavy rainfall.
