This dive site is Fish Rock Cave, Australia's only true ocean cave dive, offering a unique underwater adventure. Running 125 meters through Fish Rock, divers can explore a massive tunnel that pierces the rock formation. The site is directly in the path of the powerful East Australian Current (EAC), which consistently bathes the area in warm, clear water and brings diverse marine life.
Fish Rock Cave is renowned for its abundant shark populations, with divers often encountering 20-30 Grey Nurse Sharks inside and around the cave, along with countless Wobbegong sharks resting on the bottom. Beyond sharks, the site teems with multiple species of Turtles and Rays, making it a hotspot for large pelagic encounters. The influence of the EAC also ensures a rich blend of temperate and tropical fish species, contributing to a vibrant and dynamic ecosystem.
The best time to visit Fish Rock Cave is generally year-round due to the consistent warm, clear water delivered by the EAC. Divers should be experienced, with advanced certification and comfort in overhead environments, given it's a true ocean cave dive. Strong currents can be present, requiring good buoyancy control and dive planning. It's a prime location for wide-angle photography due to the impressive cave structure and large marine animals, but due to depth, currents, and overhead environment, it is not suitable for snorkeling or freediving.
