About this dive site
This dive site is renowned as the ‘Weedy Seadragon capital of the world’ and gained significant recognition through its appearance in the BBC Blue Planet II documentary. Located at Flinders Pier in Victoria, it offers a unique underwater experience. The average depth ranges from 2 to 6 meters, making it ideal for divers with varying levels of experience. Diving is best undertaken during high or slack tide. Entry and exit points are available via the beach or the lower landings on either side of the pier. Divers should exercise caution around boats and potential hazards like fisherman’s hooks and carry a dive flag and knife. Listening for boat traffic before surfacing is essential. The seabed here is dominated by seagrasses, providing a distinct contrast to the typical sandy bottoms found in Port Phillip Bay – this creates excellent camouflage for the Weedy Seadragons that call this location home. You can expect to encounter various marine life including Smooth Rays, Weedfish, Pipefish, Nudibranchs, Swell Sharks, schools of Weed Whiting and Goatfish. Occasionally, Eagle Rays, Giant Cuttlefish, Seals, Penguins, and a multitude of smaller fish species are spotted.
