About this dive site
This dive site presents the wreck of the SS Yongala, a passenger ship that tragically sank in 1911. Located within the central section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, it's situated approximately 48 nautical miles (89 km) southeast of Townsville and 12 nautical miles (22 km) east of Cape Bowling Green, Queensland, Australia. The Yongala met its end on March 23, 1911, while en route from Melbourne to Cairns when it was caught in a severe cyclone and sank south of Townsville. This site offers an opportunity to explore a significant historical wreck amidst the vibrant ecosystem of the reef.
