About this dive site

This dive site presents a fascinating historical wreck, the Darlington, located off Bermuda. The ship, built in 1881 and powered by a substantial engine, met its end on February 22, 1886 after striking Bermuda’s Western Reef while navigating unfamiliar waters. A key factor contributing to the accident was the failure of Captain Richard Ward to maintain a lookout, leading to a Marine Board of Inquiry finding him negligent. The vessel, carrying cotton and grain from New Orleans to Bremen, Germany, sank with its five officers and 23 crew members all surviving the event. The wreck rests on the seabed, offering an opportunity to explore a significant piece of maritime history. Due to the wreck’s location, currents could present a challenge, suggesting this dive site is likely suitable for experienced divers.
