About this dive site

This dive site is located at the end of a small walking trail, accessible via a parking lot approximately 328 feet (100 meters) from the water. The area, commonly called 'The New Bear Cove,' offers diving opportunities for novice to experienced divers. A significant feature is a wreck situated around 65 feet (19.8 meters) deep. There's ongoing debate about whether this wreck is the Humboldt, a ship that sank in 1853 during fierce weather while en route from Southampton to New York. The Humboldt was carrying valuable cargo and tragically, only one life was lost. The trail leading to the water has three barriers; the central one is removable but should be replaced after use. Due to its exposed location, expect potential surges. Divers should be mindful of others using the park trail. To enhance safety, consider bringing a bottle of water during summer months and packing gear if necessary. Cell phone coverage is available in the area. Emergency contact information includes Dickson Building of The Victoria General (473-7998), Police and Ambulance (911), DAN 1-919-684-4DAN (4326), QE II Hospital (473 -2220) and Marine Radio VHF Channel 16. Be aware of lobster traps, fishing buoys, and always dive with a knife for self-rescue.
