About this dive site

This dive site is the wreck of the Salem Express, a passenger ferry that sank in 1991 off the coast of Safaga, Egypt. The wreck lies at a depth ranging from 12 to 33 meters, making it accessible to divers with intermediate certification. Navigation within the wreck requires careful planning and attention to buoyancy, due to the debris and potential for entanglement. The history of the wreck is somber, but its current state provides a fascinating and poignant dive experience.

Marine life abundant on and around the wreck includes a variety of fish species attracted to the artificial reef created by the sunken vessel. Coral growth is significant, with diverse types colonizing the structure. Smaller marine organisms such as crustaceans and other invertebrates can also be seen in and around the wreck and nearby reef structures.

The best time to visit is during the warmer months (April-November) when visibility is typically good and the water is calmer. Divers should check weather and current conditions before undertaking this dive. Due to the depth and potential hazards of wreck penetration, this dive is not suitable for beginners or for freediving. The area is characterized by mild currents, but divers should still maintain proper buoyancy and control to avoid damage to the wreck and ensure safety.
