About this dive site

This dive site, known as Black Forest, is located off the coast of Grenada and is renowned for its stunning underwater landscape and biodiversity. The dive begins on a gentle slope descending to a maximum depth of 20 meters (approximately 73 feet), characterized by a profusion of black gorgonians that give the site its name. These gorgonians, along with large orange elephant ear sponges, create a vibrant and visually striking reef structure, punctuated by numerous holes and crevices that provide shelter for a variety of marine life. Navigation is relatively straightforward, following the sloping reef structure. There is no known specific history tied to the naming of the site, other than the abundance of the black gorgonians.

The Black Forest is teeming with marine life. You can expect to encounter black cyphomas on the gorgonians, as well as an abundance of shrimps, crabs, eels, lobsters, and porcupinefish inhabiting the numerous holes and crevices within the reef. The gorgonians themselves also provide habitat for a vast array of smaller invertebrates. The larger sponge formations offer additional microhabitats for various species.

The best time to visit Black Forest is during the drier months (January to April) when visibility tends to be at its best, and the seas are calmer. It is suitable for both scuba diving and freediving, although divers should be mindful of potential currents, especially at deeper depths. Divers and freedivers should maintain buoyancy control to avoid damaging the delicate gorgonians. Maintaining a safe distance from the marine life is essential to ensure the longevity of this underwater wonder.
