This dive site features the Hema One, a 200ft cargo vessel that sank in 2011 while empty of cargo. The wreck lies on its starboard side at a maximum depth of 28 meters, positioned across the prevailing current. Its collapsed cargo hold now offers intriguing exploration and shelter for marine life, providing a fascinating artificial reef environment.
The Hema One is teeming with diverse marine life. Divers can expect to encounter lobsters, various sharks including Nurse and black tip sharks, and cottonwicks inhabiting the wreck itself. Schools of eagle rays frequently patrol above the wreck, alongside large schools of barracuda. Turtles are often observed resting peacefully in the stern section.
The best time to visit Grenada for diving is typically during the dry season from January to May, offering calmer seas and excellent visibility, though diving is possible year-round. This site is ideal for photographers looking for both wide-angle wreck shots and close-ups of the resident marine life. Freedivers can explore the shallower sections and the top of the wreck, while scuba divers can delve into the collapsed holds, but should be mindful of the moderate currents and depth.
