This dive site, Lighthouse Reef, is an exposed patch reef located off the coast of Grenada. Divers can explore a vibrant underwater landscape characterized by large rock formations and mysterious overhangs, which often serve as hiding spots for impressive nurse sharks. While there is no specific historical information or unique story detailed for this site, its natural topography guides divers through an engaging exploration dominated by expansive hard coral formations and numerous large seafans.
The marine life at Lighthouse Reef is primarily highlighted by its substantial population of nurse sharks. Divers have a very good chance of encountering large individuals, ranging from 1.5 to 3 meters (5 to 10 feet) in length. Particularly exciting is the opportunity to observe pregnant female nurse sharks preparing to give birth during the middle of the year. Beyond these majestic sharks, the reef boasts a healthy ecosystem of hard corals and large seafans, which support a diverse array of typical Caribbean reef fish and smaller invertebrates.
For optimal encounters with the nurse sharks, especially the pregnant females, the middle of the year is considered the best time to visit. With a maximum depth of 20 meters and an average depth of approximately 10 meters, this site is suitable for intermediate divers and offers excellent opportunities for freediving. Being an exposed reef, divers should be prepared for potentially moderate currents, which can add an exciting element to the dive experience.
