About this dive site

This dive site, known as "The Protected Area" (השמורה), is a captivating underwater experience located off the coast of Eilat, Israel. The dive begins with a descent onto a rich drop-off teeming with vibrant coral formations. The site's main feature is the impressive collection of large stony corals, some reaching diameters of over two meters. Navigation is relatively straightforward, following the drop-off and then exploring the Moshe and Ah’aron pinnacles on the return journey. There is no known historical significance to the site's name, but 'Heshmurah' translates to 'The Reserve' indicating a protected status.

The marine life is abundant and diverse. You can expect to see a variety of fish common to the Red Sea, along with more unusual sightings such as pufferfish sheltering amongst the coral, blue spotted rays gracefully gliding across the seabed, and the occasional octopus lurking in its den. The healthy coral provides a rich habitat for a wide range of smaller invertebrates and fish, making this a great location for macro photography.

The best time to visit is during the warmer months, from April to October, when water temperatures are pleasant and visibility is at its peak. While currents are generally mild, they can be more pronounced on certain days, so divers and freedivers should check the weather and sea conditions beforehand. The relatively shallow maximum depth makes it a suitable dive for both certified divers and experienced freedivers, but always exercise caution and respect the marine environment.
