About this dive site
This dive site features the Asahi 16, a gravel transport ship that now rests split in half underwater. This notable Japanese shipwreck offers a unique diving experience, with its large hull creating an unexpected structure in the sandy surroundings. Descent ropes are typically found at both the bow and stern, aiding divers in exploring the two main sections of the wreck. Near the bow, a prominent winch attracts a variety of colorful marine life.
The Atami Wreck has become a thriving habitat for numerous fish species and invertebrates. Divers can observe anemones and anthias, along with schools of red snapper near the bow. The shallower parts of the wreck are often populated by hawk moths and damselfish, while soft corals adorn the hull, providing shelter for flounder. This rich biodiversity makes it ideal for both wide-angle and macro photography.
While specific seasonal highlights are not provided, wreck diving in Japan can be enjoyed year-round, with warmer months typically offering better visibility. The site's diverse marine life and intriguing structure make it an excellent destination for underwater photographers and wreck enthusiasts.
