About this dive site

This dive site, Barachin, is the historic wreck of a World War II battleship located in Takinoura Bay, Chodo Island, part of Japan's Ogasawara Islands. The vessel, now broken apart, rests at an average depth of around 10-12 meters, making it easily accessible. Its proximity and easy access from Chichijima make it a major attraction within the Ogasawara diving community. Divers can explore the remnants of the wreck and the surrounding reefs that extend down to 20 meters, serving as a vibrant artificial fishing reef. The marine life at Barachin is notably abundant and diverse. Schooling root fish are frequently observed around the wreck structure. The surrounding reefs, extending to 20 meters deep, are crowded with beautiful species such as Scorpionfish, Scabiosa, Keramahana, and Hydrangea. Larger fish like snappers, schools of sawfish, and groupers are also commonly seen, alongside ribbonfish. Macro enthusiasts will appreciate the presence of various cleaning shrimps, including Red-headed Shrimps, and swarms of smaller fish, possibly swallowtail fish. Barachin is highly recommended for divers of all experience levels, particularly beginners, due to its mild to non-existent currents and relatively shallow depths. It offers excellent opportunities for both wide-angle photography, capturing the wreck and schooling fish, and macro photography, focusing on the smaller, colorful inhabitants. Both snorkelers and freedivers will find the shallow wreck and the rich marine biodiversity enjoyable. While specific seasonal highlights are not provided, the Ogasawara Islands generally offer optimal diving conditions during their peak seasons, ensuring clear waters and active marine ecosystems.
