About this dive site

This dive site, Maguroana, meaning 'Tuna Hole', is located at a strange rock formation on Yomejima, the southernmost island of the Keita archipelago, approximately 50 km from Chichijima in Japan. A unique feature is the 'Arc de Triomphe' structure, half-submerged in water, which forms part of the site's intriguing underwater topography. The name 'Maguroana' comes from the phenomenon of bluefin tuna congregating in the site's various holes and crevices, often in impressive numbers. The marine life here is exceptional, primarily known for the massive congregations of bluefin tuna, sometimes exceeding 100 individuals, found within the rock formations. Additionally, large schools of fish such as blue-and-white crested woodpeckers and black-headed coral reefers can be observed, especially when venturing offshore. Encounters with 'bluefin crocodiles' (likely referring to large predatory fish like Trevally or similar species) are also common. Hand dolphins are a significant highlight, with frequent encounters both at the surface and during dives. The best time to visit Maguroana is when conditions allow for optimal encounters with the numerous large pelagic species. Divers can expect a thrilling experience with plentiful big fish action. Freedivers will also find this site highly rewarding due to the relatively shallow average depth (11 meters), clear waters, and the opportunity to interact with dolphins from the surface or during breath-hold dives. The site offers a dynamic environment, combining unique geological features with a vibrant ecosystem.
