About this dive site

This dive site, "Red Marker," is located near the green marker of Hija Fishing Port, north of the Hija River mouth in Japan. It features a large reef stretching east to west across a sandy seabed. Navigation involves exploring the shallow soft coral areas, descending to the deeper sandy-muddy bottom, and locating the intriguing "stone circle" – a peculiar, granite-like boulder on the western side. This unique formation is speculated to be a tombstone from a ship's cargo, adding a historical mystery to the site. The marine life here is abundant and diverse. Shallow areas are rich in soft corals. Divers can observe various fish species including wrasse, butterflyfish, and sea otters. All species of clownfish, except the red clownfish, are present. On the deeper sandy-muddy southern side, symbiotic gobies like the Newdow's Goby can be found. Notably, Orthodox spiny dogfish inhabit the site, and rare nudibranchs make appearances during the winter months. The best time to visit for unique marine life is winter, when rare nudibranchs can be spotted. The site is suitable for all levels, with shallow depths ideal for beginners and snorkelers, while deeper sections and macro opportunities appeal to more experienced divers and photographers. Freedivers will also appreciate the manageable depth and varied reef. It's an excellent spot for macro photography and exploring unique underwater topography.
