About this dive site
This dive site, Banco Rosario, named after its Italian discoverer, Rosario, is located on a rocky rise near the entrance to the Nosy Be plateau in the Mozambique Channel. Its proximity to a location where the Cousteau crew once moored their vessel adds to its historical intrigue. The dive site is relatively shallow, making it accessible to divers of various experience levels. Navigation is straightforward, following the rocky formations and vibrant coral structures. The underwater topography is characterized by a gently sloping reef.
The marine life at Banco Rosario is abundant and diverse. Expect to encounter a wide variety of colorful reef fish, including various species of angelfish, parrotfish, and butterflyfish. Gorgonians provide a stunning backdrop to the reef, offering shelter for smaller creatures. Coral formations are healthy and varied.
The best time to visit Banco Rosario is during the dry season (May to October), when visibility is generally at its best and the seas are calmer. Strong currents are uncommon at this site, making it suitable for both snorkeling and freediving, although boat access is recommended. Divers and freedivers should remember to respect the marine environment and maintain a safe distance from any wildlife. Remember to check the weather conditions before going.
