About this dive site
This dive site, Grand Banc Extérieur, is located off the coast of Nosy Be, Madagascar, approximately 50 minutes by boat from a central point. It's characterized by a dramatic drop-off ranging from 20 to 40 meters, making it a visually stunning dive. Due to the currents, this dive is recommended only during a rising tide to ensure a safer and more controlled experience. Navigating underwater requires attention to the currents, especially given the depths involved.
The marine life is incredibly diverse. You can expect to encounter various shark species including hammerhead sharks (most abundant in January and February, with some sightings in December), grey reef sharks, and white tip reef sharks. Other large pelagic fish such as tuna and barracuda are frequently spotted, as well as schools of fusiliers and other smaller reef fish. While the site is known for its big animals, it also offers a nice selection of smaller reef inhabitants.
The best time to visit Grand Banc Extérieur is during the months of December, January, and February for the highest chance of seeing hammerhead sharks. Divers should be aware of the moderate currents and plan accordingly, ensuring that they have enough experience to navigate the depth and currents. Because of the significant depth, this site is not suitable for snorkeling or freediving; it is exclusively for scuba divers. Always dive with an experienced guide.
