About this dive site

This dive site, Bodu Thila, is a vibrant pinnacle situated in a channel approximately 20 minutes east of Kandolhu, near Ellaidhoo. The pinnacle features a healthy top reef at around 8 meters, which then dramatically slopes down to depths exceeding 30 meters. Due to its location in a channel, divers should expect and be prepared for strong currents, requiring quick descents and proficiency in drift diving. No specific history or story behind the dive site is provided, but its name "Bodu Thila" translates to "Big Thila" in Dhivehi, indicating its prominence. The diverse marine life at Bodu Thila is a major draw. The south side is particularly rich, boasting numerous overhangs that provide shelter for spectacular gorgonian fans and intricate black coral bushes. These structures also serve as resting spots for larger marine animals, with nurse sharks and stingrays commonly found napping within the crevices and under the ledges. A variety of colorful reef fish are also prevalent, thriving in the strong currents that bring nutrients. The best time to visit the Maldives generally falls between December and May, offering optimal weather and water conditions, though marine life is abundant year-round. For divers, mastering quick descents is crucial due to the strong currents. While the top reef at 8 meters makes it suitable for snorkeling and freediving, both activities require caution due to the variable and potentially strong currents.
