About this dive site

This dive site, known locally as Miyaru Faru or “Shark’s Reef”, is located just outside Gulhi island in the Maldives. It's a vibrant channel reef celebrated for its abundant shark population. Divers typically navigate along the reef edge or channel, often as a drift dive, following the currents to encounter the diverse marine life. There is no specific historical background provided for the site itself, but it embodies the rich natural heritage of the Maldivian atolls. The marine life here is exceptionally rich, living up to its name. Divers can expect to see white tip sharks, grey reef sharks, nurse sharks, and less common leopard sharks. Rare sightings include tiger sharks and whale sharks. Green and hawksbill turtles are common, alongside schools or solitary eagle rays, stingrays, and huge napoleon wrasse. Lucky divers might also encounter pods of dolphins and rare bumphead parrotfish. The best time to visit the Maldives generally falls between December and May, offering calm seas and excellent visibility, although specific pelagic sightings can vary seasonally. For divers, be prepared for potentially strong currents, which are often what attract the large pelagic species. Freedivers will find the moderate maximum depth and abundant big animals highly rewarding, making it an excellent spot for breath-hold encounters with sharks and rays.
