About this dive site
This dive site, Hafsa Thila, also known as Angotti, is a prominent underwater pinnacle or 'thila' located in the North Ari Atoll of the Maldives. To dive here, divers must be prepared for a well-organized and potentially rapid descent on command to the reef top, which starts at 12 meters, often to mitigate currents. Once established on the main reef, the diving becomes more straightforward and enjoyable.
The main draw of Hafsa Thila is its population of stationary grey reef sharks, which are almost guaranteed sightings on every dive, making it a spectacular big animal encounter. In addition to these magnificent predators, the site boasts a healthy coral reef ecosystem supporting a diverse range of reef fish and occasional pelagic species.
The best time to visit for optimal conditions is typically during the Maldives' dry season, from December to May, when visibility is generally excellent. Divers should be proficient in controlled descents. While the reef top is at 12 meters, making it less ideal for casual snorkeling, experienced freedivers might find the opportunity to encounter sharks and enjoy the vibrant marine life a rewarding challenge, provided they are comfortable with the initial depth and potential currents.
