About this dive site

This dive site, Holhi Wall, is an inside reef situated approximately 15 minutes northeast of Joy Island in the Maldives. The dive typically involves following the impressive wall, which dramatically descends from a shallow top reef at 3 meters. It plunges vertically, and in some sections, even forms an overhang, extending down to a maximum recorded depth of 19 meters, with coral blocks scattered at its base (the wall itself extends to 25m). Holhi Wall is well-regarded for its structural integrity, offering numerous nooks and crannies to explore, and has gained local fame as an excellent location for night dives. Adding to its allure, local legend suggests that a Tiger Shark frequents this wall, making every dive a potential encounter with this magnificent creature. The Holhi Wall presents a vibrant underwater tapestry, richly adorned with a diverse array of sponges and healthy corals that provide shelter and food for countless reef inhabitants. Closer inspection reveals an abundance of fascinating macro life, as Nudibranchs, Crabs, and Shrimps cleverly conceal themselves within the wall's many small caves and crevices. Beyond the smaller creatures, the site offers the exciting possibility of spotting larger pelagic species, most notably the legendary Tiger Shark that is said to call this specific wall its home, alongside the ubiquitous and colorful reef fish common to Maldivian waters. For optimal diving conditions at Holhi Wall, the dry season, typically from December to May, is generally recommended, offering clearer waters and calmer seas, though the Maldives provides year-round diving opportunities. The site is particularly renowned for its exceptional night diving experiences, during which the nocturnal residents of the wall emerge, transforming the landscape with new sights and sounds. Both scuba divers and freedivers will find Holhi Wall rewarding; the shallow top reef is perfect for snorkeling and beginner freedivers, while the deeper wall sections and overhangs offer an engaging challenge and exploration opportunity for more experienced breath-hold divers and scuba enthusiasts alike.
