About this dive site

This dive site, known as Lankan Caves, offers an exhilarating drift dive experience characterized by persistent currents. Divers typically start either near Manta Point or, for less current, directly at the channel entrance, navigating the current-swept reef. The "caves" are actually impressive overhangs ranging from 12 to 30 meters, providing shelter and unique topography. For highly experienced divers, a deep nose in the middle of the current offers an additional challenge and potential for unique sightings. Lankan Caves is renowned for its diverse pelagic marine life. Lucky divers can encounter majestic mantas and mobulas, impressive napoleon wrasse, and various shark species including grey reef sharks, white-tip and black-tip reef sharks. With significant luck, even a hammerhead shark might be spotted patrolling the deeper waters. While no specific best time is mentioned, the Maldives generally offers excellent diving year-round, with specific seasons enhancing manta or hammerhead sightings. Divers should be well-prepared for strong currents and comfortable with drift diving techniques. Experienced freedivers can also enjoy exploring the shallower overhangs and the vibrant reef, always keeping current conditions in mind.
