About this dive site

This dive site, Maafushi Lagoon, is a unique shore dive located in the Maldives, characterized by its shallow depths of 2-3 meters and approximately 200 meters in length. It features a sandy bottom interspersed with patches of seaweed and coral blocks. This lagoon is a crucial part of the Maldives Passions Coral Growing Farm Project, serving as a rehabilitation and propagation area for corals. Divers can easily navigate this site along the lagoon's edge, observing the conservation efforts firsthand. The lagoon teems with diverse marine life, especially juvenile species thriving in the protected environment. Divers can expect to encounter many types of juvenile reef fish, various crustaceans and shells, and frequently spot juvenile blacktip sharks and juvenile stingrays. The site is also visited by larger pelagic species such as adult eagle rays and occasional hawksbill turtles, adding to the richness of the underwater experience. The best time to visit Maafushi Lagoon for diving and snorkeling is generally during the dry season from December to May when conditions are calm and visibility is optimal. It's a highlight for those interested in marine conservation and seeing a thriving nursery. This site is particularly suitable for beginners due to its shallow, sheltered nature, and it offers excellent opportunities for macro photography enthusiasts. Freedivers will also appreciate the manageable depths and abundant marine life.
