About this dive site

This dive site is known as Thin Thila, located just north of Hilton Maldives Amingiri resort in a dynamic channel east of Hulangu Kandu. The site is characterized by a prominent thila featuring three distinct top reefs at a shallow depth of 3 meters, making it accessible even near the surface. The main sandy bottom extends to depths of 20 to 30 meters. Due to its strategic location within the channel, divers should anticipate strong and variable currents. The marine biodiversity at Thin Thila is rich, offering both macro and pelagic encounters. Divers can spot intricate small life such as nudibranchs, vibrant anemone fish, elusive squad shrimp, colourful sea stars, and diligent cleaner shrimp among the reef. For those seeking larger marine life, the site is frequented by hunting tunas and jack fish, majestic eagle rays, and often provides sightings of white tip reef sharks gracefully resting or patrolling, alongside sleeping sting rays on the sandy bottom. Thin Thila can be dived year-round, with specific seasons potentially enhancing pelagic sightings depending on monsoon patterns. Divers should be proficient in current diving techniques, and a reef hook might be useful for observing marine life in stronger currents. The shallow reef tops make this site also suitable for experienced freedivers and snorkelers, offering excellent opportunities to witness vibrant reef life and even some larger animals closer to the surface. It's recommended to dive with an experienced local guide to navigate the currents safely.
