This dive site, Ras il-Hobz, also known as "Middlefinger", is a prominent pinnacle off the coast of Malta, rising from 9 meters to over 40 meters. Divers can approach from a shallow bay or descend directly onto the wall, which offers diverse topography for exploration. The pinnacle itself is a dramatic underwater feature, offering a captivating backdrop for underwater photography. The site's depth and potential for blue water diving require confident buoyancy skills.
Marine life at Ras il-Hobz is abundant and varied. Schools of sardines and damsels are common, often attracting larger predators like jacks. The walls are adorned with tube worms, while scorpionfish and flabellinas (sea slugs) can be spotted amongst the crevices. Other species may vary throughout the year and visibility.
The best time to visit Ras il-Hobz is during the warmer months (spring and summer) when visibility is typically at its best, and water temperatures are more comfortable. Due to its depth and varying current, this dive is recommended for experienced divers. Freedivers and snorkellers should avoid this site due to its depth and complexity.
