About this dive site
This dive site is the wreck of the Um el Faroud, a significant wreck dive in Malta. The wreck sits at a considerable depth, often requiring two dives to fully explore due to its size and the depth of penetration needed to see all aspects. Navigation involves careful planning and adherence to depth limits due to the significant depth of the site. The wreck itself is a fascinating subject, with its bow and funnel standing as particularly impressive features. A memorial plaque adds a poignant touch to the experience.
The marine life around the Um el Faroud wreck is abundant and diverse. Barracudas can be seen in small shoals, and a close examination reveals a plethora of Mediterranean inhabitants inhabiting the wreck and surrounding area. This includes a variety of fish species typical to the Mediterranean Sea, including smaller fish in and around the wreck structure and larger pelagic species swimming nearby.
The best time to visit the Um el Faroud wreck is during the calmer months of summer and early autumn (May to October) when the water is clear and currents are milder. Proper planning, including checking weather conditions and carrying adequate dive equipment, is crucial. This dive is not suitable for beginners or inexperienced divers, and adequate training and certification for the depth is essential. Given the wreck's depth, it's strictly a scuba dive.
