About this dive site

This dive site features the UM-FAROUD, a 1995 oil tanker that operated between Libya and Italy. The vessel experienced technical difficulties, leading to an explosion in one of its tanks during dry dock repairs in Malta, resulting in the tragic loss of several shipyard workers. Subsequently, in 1998, after being assessed and deemed depreciated, the tanker was intentionally scuttled near Wied Iz-Zurrieq Bay, Malta, transforming into an artificial reef designed to attract divers. This creates a fascinating dive experience exploring a large wreck with a rich history.

The site offers visibility that can vary depending on conditions, but generally provides good viewing opportunities for underwater exploration. Dive depths are variable due to the wreck's configuration, making it suitable for experienced divers who are comfortable navigating around and within a larger structure. The area is known for its currents, which should be factored into dive planning.

While not known for abundant marine life, exploring the UM-FAROUD provides an opportunity to observe typical Mediterranean reef fish and other benthic organisms associated with shipwrecks.
