This dive site, despite its common misnomer as L2D “Tabby“ (Japanese DC-3), is primarily the wreck of an LST 1 class vessel, specifically LST 331, which sank in Subic Bay. This Landing Ship, Tank was historically used to transport troops, tanks, and cargo, and its resting place at a maximum depth of 29 meters, with an average depth around 14 meters, now offers an intriguing exploration for divers. The wreck's structure provides various entry points and features for underwater navigation.
The LST wreck has been beautifully colonized by marine life, transforming into a vibrant habitat. It is adorned with a rich variety of whip corals, intricate sea fans, and delicate hydroids. Divers are frequently greeted by active schools of jacks, various snappers, and distinctive spadefish, which are often seen congregating around the wreck's superstructure.
The ideal time to dive the LST in Subic Bay is during the Philippine dry season, typically from November to May, offering the calmest waters and best visibility. This site is suitable for intermediate divers due to the wreck environment and depth, but its shallower parts are accessible for those with good buoyancy control. Freedivers can also enjoy exploring the upper sections of the wreck given its manageable average depth.
