About this dive site

This dive site is the Almeida Carvalho, one of four decommissioned Portuguese Navy ships sunk to create the Ocean Revival underwater park off the Algarve coast. The wreck lies at a maximum depth of 30 meters, with an average depth around 18 meters. Navigation is relatively straightforward, as the wreck is a large, easily identifiable structure. The ship is 64 meters long and 12 meters wide, offering ample opportunities for exploration, including penetration into some sections (for experienced divers only). The sinking occurred on September 21, 2013.

The abundant marine life thriving on and around the wreck includes conger eels, sea bream (both golden and other varieties), octopus, and scorpionfish. The artificial reef has fostered a diverse ecosystem, attracting a range of fish species, and creating a rich and varied underwater landscape.

The best time to visit is during the warmer months (spring to autumn), when visibility is typically better and the water is warmer. Divers should be aware of potential currents, and although generally mild, appropriate buoyancy control is essential. Experienced divers are recommended due to wreck penetration. Freediving is generally not recommended at this depth and for this type of dive.
