About this dive site

This dive site, known as Castelo, is a relatively shallow rocky reef located off the coast of Portugal. The dive consists of exploring the main reef structure, which extends upwards from the seabed, and venturing to three larger rocks a short distance away. The navigation is straightforward due to the shallow depths and clear visibility. There is no known historical significance attached to this particular dive site, but it is popular because of its accessibility and diversity of marine life.

The abundant marine life includes various octopus species, small shrimp, European lobsters, and other crustaceans. The sandy bottom surrounding the reef provides habitat for stingrays. While the fish life may not be abundant in large numbers, there's a good variety of smaller species.

The best time to visit Castelo is during the warmer months, typically from May to October, when water temperatures are more comfortable and visibility is at its best. While there aren't strong currents, paying attention to weather conditions is always advisable. For freedivers, the shallow depth allows for extended bottom time, while the ease of navigation makes it ideal for beginners. For divers, it is a relaxing dive with much to see, especially for macro photography.
