About this dive site

This dive site, Ponta da Passagem, is located near Sesimbra, Portugal, and features a large canyon with walls teeming with colorful marine life. Navigation is relatively straightforward, following the canyon walls which offer a natural guide. The site is popular amongst divers due to its abundance of life and varied topography. There's no known specific history to the site beyond its natural formation.

The canyon is home to a diverse array of species. Yellow sponges, nudibranchs, and anemones adorn the walls, offering excellent macro photography opportunities. Larger marine life includes seabreams, moray eels, and cuttlefish, while the kelp forests provide habitat for numerous other creatures.

The best time to visit is during the warmer months (May-October) when visibility is typically at its best and the water temperature is more pleasant. For freedivers, the moderate depth and generally calm conditions within the canyon make it a suitable location. However, divers should be aware of potential currents, especially near the canyon openings. Good buoyancy control is crucial to prevent disturbance of the delicate ecosystem.
