About this dive site

This dive site, Outside Edge at Aliwal Shoal, is a renowned dive location off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Known for its dramatic drop-off and vibrant reef ecosystem, it's not for the faint of heart. The dive typically involves navigating along the reef wall, descending to explore the diverse marine life at various depths. Due to its depth and potential for strong currents, it is strictly for certified Advanced Open Water divers or higher.

The reef teems with a wide array of marine life, from macro species like cuttlefish, nudibranchs, and the rare Hawaiian red lobster to larger animals including various reef fish, pelagic species, and potentially sharks. Divers can expect to encounter stunning coral formations, diverse sponges, and a wealth of invertebrates. The wall itself presents a dramatic landscape to explore.

The best time to visit Aliwal Shoal is during the warmer months (October to May), when visibility is typically excellent and the water is calmer. Divers should be prepared for potential currents, especially at depth, and should always check weather conditions and current forecasts before the dive. This dive is not suitable for freediving due to the depth and currents.
