About this dive site

This dive site, Rooneys, is a vibrant reef system located off the coast of South Africa, accessible only by boat. The dive itself is best suited for experienced divers comfortable with deeper depths and potentially using Nitrox to maximize bottom time and enjoy the full extent of the underwater spectacle. Navigation is generally straightforward, following the reef structure, but divers should always maintain awareness of their depth and buoyancy.

Marine life abounds at Rooneys. Divers can expect to encounter a variety of fish, including the striking Black Coral Tree, the elusive Longnose Hawkfish, the Swallowtail Hawkfish, and numerous schooling cardinals and sweepers. Cleaner shrimp are also present, adding to the diverse ecosystem. This site may also present larger fish and other species depending on the time of year.

The best time to visit Rooneys is during the warmer months (spring and summer), when visibility is typically at its best, and the water temperatures are more comfortable. Strong currents are less likely during this time. While not recommended for freediving due to the depth and potential for currents, scuba divers should take all necessary safety precautions, including checking weather and sea conditions before heading out, and dive with a buddy.
