About this dive site

This dive site presents the SAS Somerset, a historic 'Bar' class boom defence vessel moored at the V&A waterfront in Cape Town. Formerly HMS Barbrake, this sister ship to the SAS Fleur (which was scuttled in 1966) offers a unique diving experience. The wreck is heavily encrusted with marine life, including numerous strawberry anemones and Cape urchins. The seabed around the vessel features flat sand with shell fragments and detritus. Maximum depth reaches approximately 41 meters, with the main deck at 35m and the superstructure’s top at 33m. The wreck lies almost level, embedded in the sand, its bow facing south (estimated magnetic bearing of 178°). Hull structure is significantly deteriorated, exhibiting extensive rust and missing plating from large sections. Much of the superstructure has collapsed since 2009, with a portion of the bow broken off and subsided. White Seacatfish and Kingklip are commonly spotted within the wreck’s interior. Seals frequently visit during safety stops, offering a potential (lucky) sighting. Photography opportunities exist for wide-angle shots showcasing the decaying structure, but close-up macro work is limited. Visibility will greatly affect photography success.
