This dive site, Gerardias, is situated off the uninhabited island of Montaña Clara, part of the pristine Chinijo Archipelago in the Canary Islands, Spain. It is exclusively recommended for expert divers who possess the Deep Diving specialty due to its maximum depth of 39 meters. The site is characterized by significant depths, offering a challenging yet rewarding experience for those adequately trained.
Underwater, divers are greeted by vibrant meadows of Gerardias, a type of black coral, and colorful gorgonians, which create a rich and diverse habitat. The site is also renowned for its abundant pelagic life, providing opportunities to encounter various open-ocean species and schools of fish that frequent these nutrient-rich waters.
With a consistent excellent visibility of around 30 meters, Gerardias offers superb conditions for appreciating its deep-sea flora and fauna. The focus on deep diving and expert skill means it's not suitable for snorkeling or recreational freediving. Divers should ensure they are appropriately certified and equipped for deep dives to fully and safely enjoy the unique biodiversity and challenging profile of this exceptional site.
