About this dive site

This dive site presents the wreck of a Dragaminas costero de la clase MSC-139, nicknamed "Bluebird" (Minesweeper Coastal). Originally constructed in Oregon pine by the South Coast Co. Newport Beach CA and initially intended for the French Navy as M691 Oeillet, this vessel was commissioned in November 1952, completed in February 1954, and delivered to the Spanish Navy as M-21. Located in the Mazarrón Bay, east of Bajo de fuera, it’s accessible via a 5-minute boat ride from the harbor at a depth of approximately 35 meters within an sandy bottom. The wreck is heavily deteriorated and is not recommended for interior exploration due to its condition. In its prime, the vessel was accessible, particularly on the bridge, requiring caution during visits. Inside, divers could explore various cabins, holds, and passageways, including bathrooms, the captain's quarters, second and third holds, and even the bowcastle. The bridge is easily reachable, offering access to armories, shelves, and other compartments. The dive is considered of intermediate difficulty, suitable for experienced divers with estimated bottom time between 25-30 minutes. The descent begins via a cable leading directly to the bow, situated at 28 meters, where exploration extends both inside and outside the ship. Fauna observed includes groups of obladas, sargos, dorados, corvinas, barracudas, and passing fish like moonfish. Inside the wreck, opportunities exist to spot brótola, mero, and occasionally cigarrón.
