This dive site, known as the Chip Chip Wreck, is located approximately 90 minutes west of Koh Tao in the open ocean. Its discovery was quite accidental, when a local fishing boat unexpectedly snagged its anchor on the sunken vessel. The wreck lies on the seabed, requiring divers to descend to its depths. As a deep dive, it offers a unique opportunity to explore a significant underwater structure and its surrounding environment.
The Chip Chip Wreck is teeming with marine life, particularly known for hosting large schools of Barracuda and Batfish that often congregate around the structure. Its open ocean location also presents a thrilling chance to encounter larger pelagic species such as sharks and rays as they pass by, adding an element of unpredictability and excitement to each dive.
Being an open ocean, deep dive, the Chip Chip Wreck is recommended for at least Advanced Divers. Divers should be prepared for potential variable currents. The best time to visit would generally align with the calmest sea conditions, which often means outside of monsoon seasons for the Gulf of Thailand, allowing for the 90-minute boat journey and optimal visibility. Due to its depth and the 'deep dive only' nature, it is not suitable for snorkeling or general freediving.
