About this dive site

This dive site is a submerged tugboat, the Dauntless No. 11, located off the Shinnecock Inlet at the 12 Mile Reef. Built in 1936 by Jakobson Shipyard Incorporated of Brooklyn New York (hull #259), it served initially as the Dauntless No. 11 for the Dauntless Towing Company of New York. In 1955, it was acquired by the Moran Towing Company and renamed Martha Moran. Later, in 1978, it became the Crosby Towboat Company’s Dauntless once again. The tug remained with the C and M Towing Company until 2005 when it went out of documentation and was intentionally sunk as part of the NYS DEC reef program. It rests at a depth of 126 feet below sea level. The wreck offers an interesting dive for experienced divers, providing opportunities to explore a historic vessel in a submerged environment. Visibility around the wreck will vary depending on conditions.
