About this dive site

This dive site features the wreck of the Rum Runner, a 84-foot tugboat that sank in October 1922. The vessel rests approximately 80 feet below the surface, located eight miles southeast of Atlantic Beach Inlet. The Lizzie D, as she was initially known, is now considered a significant underwater attraction. The hull presents as an upright structure, though the upper deck has broken away and scatters around the wreck. It’s often described as resembling a large rowboat due to its many openings in the main deck. A prominent feature is the boiler, which rises just above the deck, providing easy access for divers. The interior contains approximately two feet of mud and broken glass; however, intact bottles, mostly empty with forced corks, can still be discovered by those who explore carefully. The wreck's history includes a "cruise of the narrows" carried out without cargo, resulting in the loss of all crew members according to the owner’s casualty report.
