About this dive site

This dive site presents the Robert Gaskin, a fascinating 1863 double-masted iron-rigged wood barge. Located approximately 400 feet offshore, bow facing inland, near the north side of the main shipping channel, this vessel offers an interesting experience for divers. The Gaskin sits on a firm bottom with light silt and has a depth range from 60' at the bow to 70' at the stern. A gentle current flows across its deck. Divers can easily access the wreck by descending down the bow mooring line, entering through the hold, and exiting via the stern hole. Exploring the vessel reveals large timbers spanning the deck and beyond the hull, alongside massive steel drums used for chain storage in the forward hold. Notably, the transom has been blown off and rests on the river bottom, providing a unique swim-through route along the wreck's length. The site is known to be a high traffic area of smaller boats.
