About this dive site
This dive site, Naufrágio Pinguino, is a well-preserved shipwreck located in the Sítio Forte cove of Ilha Grande, Brazil. The wreck sits at a maximum depth of 16 meters, making it easily accessible and enjoyable even for novice divers. Navigation is straightforward; the wreck itself is the main point of interest, with exploration focused on observing the marine life around the structure. Penetration is prohibited for safety reasons. The site's popularity stems from its excellent condition and the rich biodiversity surrounding it.
The diverse marine life surrounding the Pinguino wreck includes schools of mullets, hoe, pirajica, and big-eyed fish. Other smaller fish and invertebrates also inhabit this area, providing great opportunities for macro photography. While larger animals may be present, this site is primarily known for its abundant smaller life.
The best time to visit Ilha Grande, and thus Naufrágio Pinguino, is during the warmer months, from October to March, when the visibility is typically better, and the water is calmer. For freedivers, this site offers a great opportunity to explore the wreck and surrounding area safely, due to its shallow depth. Divers should take note that it's imperative to maintain a safe distance from the wreck's structure and avoid any penetration, as suggested by the site description.
