About this dive site

This dive site, Ponta do Alvo (also known as Ponta Grossa do Sitio Forte), is located off Ilha Grande, Brazil, and features the intriguing remains of an old pier. Divers explore the artificial reef created by the pier's structure, navigating around its various levels and crevices. The site's history adds to its allure, hinting at past maritime activity. The relatively shallow depth makes navigation straightforward, suitable for divers of all experience levels.

The marine life is surprisingly diverse. You can spot seahorses, turtles, sea stars, and a variety of fish species common to Ilha Grande, including flying gunnards, salemas, bodiões, marimbas, and sergeants. The pier structure provides habitat for a range of smaller creatures, making it ideal for macro photography.

The best time to visit is during the warmer months (October to April), when visibility is typically at its best and the water is calmest. While the currents are generally mild, divers and freedivers should always check the local conditions before entering the water. Remember to maintain buoyancy control to avoid disturbing the delicate ecosystem around the pier.
