About this dive site
This dive site is the Santo Antao Wreck, a 30-meter-long wreck resting at a maximum depth of 11 meters. The wreck, a 60-year-old boat that crashed into the shallow rocky shore, provides an interesting and relatively easy navigation for divers of all levels. The shallow depth makes it accessible to beginners, while the abundance of marine life keeps even experienced divers engaged. The wreck itself is largely intact and provides numerous opportunities for exploration and photography.
The wreck is teeming with marine life. Divers can expect to see pufferfish (hundreds of them!), stingrays, nurse sharks, trumpetfish, turtles, moray eels, and nudibranchs. The area surrounding the wreck also likely supports a variety of reef fish and invertebrates typical of Cabo Verde's waters.
The best time to visit Santo Antao for diving is likely during the dry season (October to May), when visibility is typically better and the water is calmer. Strong currents are unlikely at this shallow depth, but divers and freedivers should always check the weather and sea conditions before entering the water. Due to the shallow depth, freediving is suitable, however, care should be taken to manage air supply and avoid entanglement with the wreck itself.
